Case Share: Custom SJTW Extension Cord Reels for a Distributor Project
We recently worked on a custom extension cord reel project for a distributor looking to expand its portable power product range.
The customer was not looking for a standard off-the-shelf cable reel. They wanted to evaluate several reel configurations that could be combined with SJTW extension cords, different outlet layouts and portable reel structures before finalizing the product.
For us, this type of project is not simply about supplying a plastic reel. The cable, plug, outlets, reel capacity and electrical configuration need to be considered as one complete assembly.
Below are some of the actual configurations we prepared during the project.
What the Customer Needed
The initial requirement was a portable extension cord reel that could complement the customer's existing electrical and extension cord range.
Before preparing the product, we discussed several key specifications with the customer:
- Extension cord type
- Wire gauge
- Cable length
- Plug configuration
- Number and type of outlets
- Reel size and structure
- Carrying handle
- Switch and protection options
- Product color
- OEM branding and packaging
Since the customer was already sourcing extension cord products, SJTW cable was one of the practical options considered for the reel assembly.
This also allowed us to develop the cable reel around a product category that was already familiar to the customer's market.
Developing Different Cable Reel Structures
Instead of asking the customer to choose only from one standard reel, we evaluated different physical structures.
Version 1 – Enclosed Multi-Outlet Cable Reel
One configuration uses an orange enclosed reel body with four outlets on the center panel and an ON/OFF switch.
The enclosed structure gives the product a clean, finished appearance while keeping several power outlets integrated directly into the reel.
For this configuration, we can match the reel with the required cable specification, plug, outlet arrangement and packaging according to the customer's target SKU.
Version 2 – Open-Frame Cable Reel
We also prepared an open-frame reel configuration.
The open structure provides easier access to the wound cable and gives the product a more industrial appearance.
When we select the reel structure, we do not look at appearance alone.
The cable diameter, required cable length, reel capacity, outlet configuration and intended application all need to be considered together.
Matching the Cable Reel with SJTW Extension Cord
For this project, the extension cord and reel were treated as one complete product rather than two separate components.
When developing an SJTW extension cord reel, we normally confirm:

This step is important because simply changing the cable length does not always mean the same reel can be used.
A longer or heavier cable may require a larger reel or a different reel structure.

From Sample Configuration to Repeat Production
For us, making the first sample is only one part of the project.
The more important objective is to create a specification that can be reproduced consistently for future orders.
Once the customer selects the preferred configuration, we can confirm the main production details, including:
- Reel structure
- SJTW cable specification
- Cable length
- Plug configuration
- Outlet arrangement
- Switch or protection options
- Housing and cable color
- Product label
- OEM logo
- Barcode
- Packaging artwork
- Master carton markings
These details can then be used as the reference for sample approval and repeat production.
